ALTON, IL - An Alton businessman is charged in two separate bank robberies in southern Indiana. Now detectives in that state are looking into other bank robberies to see if he fits the description.

George Chesnut, 46, is charged in Indiana's Gibson County with armed robbery. Authorities contend Chesnut walked into a bank in Princeton, Ind., last Friday and passed the teller a postcard saying he was an armed robber. Police say he showed the teller a handgun, then made off with roughly $4,500.

Investigators say an off-duty Indiana state trooper later spotted Chesnut's car and stopped it. Money allegedly taken in the holdup was found in the engine compartment.

Detectives with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department believe Chestnut also robbed the Evansville Federal Credit Union on Weston Road back in December.

Authorities say a search of Chesnut's home found letters from collection agencies and evidence that his funeral home business was failing.

In Gibson County, Chestnut told a judge he needed a court-appointed attorney because he could not afford one.
