ALTON, IL (KTVI - FOX2now.com) -
A big reward hopes to help catch those responsible for killing and mutilating two bald eagles. It's okay to capture these majestic birds on film. Thousands do each year. But to harm an eagle is a federal offense. Within a week's span, wildlife investigators found one eagle shot and killed in Hardin, Illinois, another decapitated with its legs removed in West Alton, Illinois.
The attacks could be the result of a black market for eagle body parts and feathers, but there's also a penalty. Those responsible could face a year in prison.
The reward for information leading to their capture is a whopping $10,000.
The reward is through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. An area couple helped bring the amount to the $10,000 level.
