ST. LOUIS MO(KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
Camping lanterns are a risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. The lanterns, which burn propane, can emanate the deadly carbon monoxide gas if they aren't working properly.
Propane is like any other fossil fuel, it gives off carbon monoxide when it burns. In most cases if a lantern is working right the carbon monoxide dissipates.
The lantern one local family was using back in 1999 was missing a tiny, but critical washer at the very top. Without that washer air was not flowing properly. Instead, the lantern was emitting toxic levels of odorless and deadly carbon monoxide gas.
