DOWNTOWN ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Cardinal fans have high hopes the boys of summer will be playing baseball well into autumn. An amazing run over the past 30 days by the St. Louis Cardinals has them way out in front in the National League Central as the city starts looking ahead to the playoffs. If you do the math, it looks very promising for the Cardinals as we enter September. There are only about 30 games left in the season, many of them to be played at Busch Stadium. As a matter of fact, 18 of the next 24 will be at home.

The Cardinals are now up by 8 games over the Cubs. All of that adds up to tickets prices being very scarce for the rest of the season.

The trades for John Smoltz, Mark Derosa, Julio Lugo, and Matt Holiday have all paid off for the Cardinals in both wins and attendance. Retailers are even reporting troubles keeping the new jerseys in stock. And to make things even more exciting for Cardinals fans, Major League Baseball is beginning a new ad campaign showcasing hometown hero, Albert Pujols.

Local businesses are also hoping the Cards are in post-season play. A play-off game leading up to the 2006 World Series meant more than 3 million dollars to the St. Louis economy. One woman who operates a hot dog stand near Busch Stadium says the All-Star Game Festivities earlier this summer tripled her sales. She believes the same would happen if the Cardinals continue their winning ways.

The folks at the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission are already checking local hotels to determine how many rooms would be available for T.V. crews and Major League Baseball officials if the Cardinals get into post-season play. A team spokesman says typically Major League Baseball does not talk to teams about any post-season preparations, like printing tickets, until after Labor Day.

The bottom line for the Birds Fans this year; if you want to see them in September and October, it's probably a good idea to get in line in August.
