HAZELWOOD, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Hazelwood Police are investigating a carjacking that occurred Thursday night in the parking lot of the St. Louis Mills Mall. A man armed with a knife approached a woman leaving her job at the mall and demanded her car keys. He took the car but did not hurt the woman. Police later found the car at Bermuda and Bishop Roads in Normandy.

Police are now analyzing evidence found inside the vehicle and going over parking lot surveillance video.

The carjacking comes on the heels of a series of car break-ins at the mall last month. However, police insist The Mills is safe. They point out that this is the first carjacking since it opened in 2003.

Some St. Louis Mills shoppers feel the same way.

Chrissy Brown said "This is probably one of the safest malls I've ever been to, I feel completely safe."

Police say no matter where you are there are things you can do to avoid being a victim.

"Be smart. Be aware of your surroundings. When walking to your car, walk with head up. People who are victims usually walk with head down and people lurking to commit crimes look for those people," explained Lieutenant Jim Hudanick from the Hazelwood Police Department.

The suspect is still on the run. If you have any information about the crime, call Hazelwood police at 314-838-5000.
