The best advice to avoid a predicted April Fool's Day computer virus is to be prepared. Even if the threat turns out to be a bust experts say it's always a good idea to make sure your anti-virus software is up to date and to back up filed. The Conficker virus, as its known, replicates a special code on its own and jumps from computer to computer within a single network.
"It could certainly disable your security systems and prevent you from finding further information on the web," said David Brown, Datotel CEO.
Brown's company supplies IT services for other companies and monitors its systems 24 hours a day.
He's made sure his clients are all prepared.
"But some people are little bit behind the times so they need to make sure they're up to date," said Brown.
Microsoft offers patches through its website to combat the threat of Confiker.
The operators of Computer Problem Busters in West County don't know what to expect but they do know the pain of losing computer files for good.
"When the pictures of your 3-year-old since birth are not going to be on that computer, that's the data that's on your computer that's the valuable commodity to a lot of people," said Eytan Rodin, Computer Problem Busters.
Rodin has yet to see on of these virus scares live up to its full threat.
One other bit of good news coming from all this is that computer users are now acutely aware of just how important it is to back up the information on their own computers. Experts say that's always a good idea.
