RED BUD, IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
A kindergarten student in Red Bud, Illinois, was watching our FOX2 News last month when she saw a story that, for some reason, touched her. Now, this adorable five-year-old has touched off a firestorm of fund-raising for a parish school in suburban Ferguson.
Sarah Ann Steibel attends St. John the Baptist school in Red Bud. In September she saw our story about Our Lady of Guadalupe in Ferguson, some 40 miles away.
Pastoral Assistant Sister Cathy Doherty said they were celebrating their 55th anniversary, their "double nickel" anniversary, by collecting nickels for the parish school fund.
Sarah Ann began her own nickel collection for Guadalupe. Word got around Red Bud and merchants soon put out canisters to pick up nickels. For larger donations, a fund was set up at North County Savings.
