Entertainer, Ed McMahon died at a Los Angeles hospital late Monday night after battling a multitude of health problems including bone cancer. He was surrounded by his family & friends. His long career took him from the Tonight Show to right here in St. Louis.
Edward Leo McMahon was born March 6th, 1923 in Detroit but raised in Lowell, Massachusetts by his grandparents. He got his first job at 15, calling bingo numbers at a carnival. Ed attended Boston College and made his on-air debut at a local radio station. When World War II broke out, McMahon enlisted in the marines and became a fighter pilot.
His national debut was as a clown on the CBS show Big Top and his big break came when he was hired as the announcer on ABC's Who Do You Trust. That show was hosted by a young Johnny Carson who took end along when Carson became the host of The Tonight Show.
In 1963, McMahon caught the eye of Anheuser Busch and became the brewery's official pitchman. The spots were shot in St. Louis and quite popular from the days of short hair to those sensational 70s sideburns. Ed even pitched Alpo dog food years before it was purchased by Nestle Purina.
