WASHINGTON, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
Drug investigators in Franklin County say they believe three deaths in the past 18 days are the result of heroin overdoses. However, St. Louis area counties are seeing similar tragedies. One of the recent deaths was in Washington, one just outside of Washington and the other near New Haven.
Drug commander, Sergeant Jason Grellner, who oversees the Drug Task Force in Franklin County, said "For the most part, we have individuals that are going into St. Louis, picking up saleable quantities of heroin and bring it out here and selling."
Grellner said "over 60% percent of any terrorism group's money comes from the sale of illegal narcotics. Buying a button of heroin or a gram of heroin, a couple ounces of heroin, on the streets in St. Louis, that money will find its way back to a terrorist organization somewhere in the world."
The other problem according to Grellner and Coroner Mary Case's office is heroin being shipped here that is stronger than usual. "We see a lot of heroin coming in from South and Central American through Mexico," Grellner says.
Heroin appears to be the new drug of choice among younger users. Grellner said "we are having heroin users as young as sophomores in high school on up through college age kids. We've got a lot of kids who are in school using heroin."
