VALLEY PARK, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
The American Legion Post in Valley Park is hoping a big turnout on Sunday will make up for what's been a long and difficult year. Post 439 was nearly washed away in 2008 during spring flooding.
The rebuilding process is nearing an end but floodwaters crept back up last week. The good news is the water receded before doing any more damage.
"There was a lot of weight lifted off our shoulders," said Jim Dodson, Post 439 board member. That big victory came during a long and difficult year.
"Two times the copper water lines and the electrical lines were stolen we've had some equipment stolen out of here and the third time someone got in here and tried to set fire to the place in three different locations," said Dodson.
The setback demoralized some members.
"It's very depressing," said Ken Richardson, Post 439 member.
Members just don't think celebrating Veteran's Day should be such a struggle.
They are hoping for a big turnout on Sunday for a ceremony and barbecue that begins at Noon.
"Just come out here and support us a little bit that would be a great help to support us," said Richardson.
The Post is located in Valley Park at 1100 St. Louis Avenue.
