ST. CLAIR COUNTY, IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
A car headed southbound on IL Rt. 163 Saturday night missed a turn and crashed into a tree. Three passengers were inside the vehicle. Corey Buskirk, 20, of Fults, IL in Monroe County was killed. The driver, 18 year old David Kernan of Millstadt, and another passenger, 18 year old Jason Phillips, also of Millstadt, were injured. They were airlifted to a St. Louis hospital.
"It sounded like a loud explosion," said one Millstadt resident who woke up to a deadly crash off Route 163 early Sunday morning. Illinois State Police now believe alcohol might have played a role in the crash.
"It was a nightmare, a sheer nightmare," said Karen Wagner.
The force of the crash sent the vehicle's engine flying toward her house. When she walked out her front door she discovered the victim's body and then heard screams for help from the two teens still trapped inside the car.
"I heard screaming from people in the vehicle and it was the most frightening thing I've ever gone through," she said.
One witness said the driver was given a breathalyzer on the scene of the crash.
Another described what appeared to her to be a case of beer scattered around the crash site near her front yard.
"What a tragic situation," said Wagner.
"Don't drink and drive it's not safe you can't do it," said Jamie King.
She was woken up by the crash as well and now is having a tough time forgetting about what she saw.
"It was horrifying it was the worst thing I ever seen in my life," said King
She's praying for the teens who survived and hopes they will be okay.
