O'FALLON, MO (KTVI - FOX2now.com) - A Wentzville man is shot and killed after confronting O'Fallon, Missouri police. It happened inside the O'Fallon apartment of his estranged girlfriend. The couple evidently had a rocky relationship. Police report they had responded to domestic disturbance calls at the apartment on other occasions.

The man has been identified as 30 year old Maurice Johnson. Police are still investigating the incident but say it started when police got a call from Rock Creek Elementary school. They were asked to check on the woman after learning the suspect had threatened her.

Chief William Siebert, O'Fallon, MO Police, "They were contacted by somebody else who apparently over the weekend, had been with the female and heard one of these threatening calls and heard what they believed to be a gunshot in the background."

When six officers arrived at the Millcreek Parkway apartments, the woman was not there but she came home after a neighbor called her. Two officers remained inside the residence and four others were outside looking for the suspect.

"We think he was somewhere close by. Cause as soon as the police cars left he showed up almost immediately soon as the other officers left."

The suspect entered the unit through a back door. Once inside he was met by the two officers.

"The suspect went for his waistband and produced a handgun. A close gun battle ensued. The suspect was struck and killed."

Police say they've been to the residence on other occasions for domestic calls. The woman did have an order of protection against Johnson and police say they had an arrest warrant for domestic violence. Police are trying to determine who fired first.

The two veteran officers have been placed on administrative leave. The elementary school got involved because the woman's daughter is a student there.
