CAHOKIA, IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
A big rig crashed through a guard rail on Interstate 255 and came within 50 yards of slamming into a family's home. It happened shortly after midnight in Cahokia as the semi was traveling south on the highway. The 18-wheeler first clipped a highway crew truck working overnight. The crew was striping the interstate. The truck then drove through the guard rail, down an embankment and overturned in the yard of a home in the 1700 block of Park Plane. People in the home were awakened by the loud crash.
The homeowners said it sounded like a crash of thunder and could feel it shake their home. The driver of the truck suffered a gash to the head but refused treatment. He was able to climb out of the wreckage on his own. No one on the striping crew was hurt. It took tow truck workers some five hours to remove the debris.
Fuel tanks on the truck ruptured and the diesel will have to be cleaned up.
The truck was hauling steel and is believed to be from the Chicago area.
