A fire at the historic Pevely Dairy at Grand and Chouteau in St. Louis went to three alarms early Sunday afternoon before firefighters were able to get it under control. Reports are that crews cutting some pipe inside the building may have set off a spark that ignited the blaze. The fire gutted the building. The midtown dairy was shut down in November 2008. Some workers moved to a north St. Louis County facility owned by Prairie Farms, the parent company of Pevely Dairy.

The building at Chouteau and Grand was to be sold.

The St. Louis Business Journal reports that the Pevely Dairy Co. site includes two buildings built between 1903 and 1906. The first building housed the dairy itself and the second was a stable.
