BELLFONTAINE NEIGHBORS, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Bellefontaine Neighbors police arrested a juvenile boy Thursday morning after a loaded hand gun was found in his book bag. A phone call to the principal of Riverview Gardens High School alerted authorities to the possibility a student had brought a weapon to the school.

Administrators ordered students into a lockdown at 7:30 a.m. and began searching lockers, classrooms and book bags. The weapon was a revolver. The district's coordinator of secondary schools Robert Mitchell said, ""no students were in danger at any point in time during this process."

The student's parents were asked to come to the school for a hearing. Police removed him in handcuffs from the building and then took him to St. Louis County juvenile authorities.

The student will be suspended for ten days and may be expelled pending the outcome of an investigation, a hearing and a vote by the board of education.

Bellefontaine Neighbors Police Chief Robert Pruett believes this was an isolated incident. He promised, "we will remain diligent with the district and work to make sure that we are on guard all the time." Pruett praised district administrators for initiating positive changes at the high school where fights were once very common.
