Thanks to a fresh supply of h1-n1 vaccine St. Louis County will be able to offer ten thousand free shots to high risk residents at five Saturday clinics located at area high schools. County Health Department Director Dr. Delores Gunn said Wednesday 33,000 additional doses of the vaccine will be delivered to the county this week. Twenty-three thousand doses are earmarked for pediatricians, obstetricians, gynecologists and schools.
Dr. Gunn wants to first reach those most at risk of catching the so-called swine flu or developing serious complications from it. The federal priority list includes pregnant women, children age six months to four years, children age five to 18 with underlying medical conditions, caregivers of infants six months or younger and health care workers.
Three hundred to four hundred thousand people fall in the high risk category in St. Louis County. "We understand that the shipment that we're getting is just a partial down payment on what we have," said Dr. Gunn. She expects regular shipments of vaccine to continue and hopes to be able to offer it to healthy adults by December.
If you have to wait until February to get a vaccination against h1-n1, Dr. Gunn recommends that you still get the shot. She said the seasonal flu often spikes at the holidays and then again in February. "Flu season can last until May," she noted.
The vaccine is provided free of charge by the federal government. Some health care facilities will provide the injection for free, but they are allowed to charge a small admnistrative fee.
Hazelwood parent Rena White watched her daughter receive the nasal mist version of the vaccination Wednesday. She was pleased to see that. "It hit home..it hit one of our kids in the Hazelwood school district so I just wanted to make sure my daughter is okay ..my children are okay," White said.
