Speed Crack-Down Starts Today In Jefferson County
Lead foots will need to lighten up when driving in Jefferson County. Police are beginning a major crack-down on speeders and say it is ticket-time. Law enforcement from Herculaneum, Peavly and Festus are are teaming up with MoDOT to reduce number of accidents along Interstate 55.

They are called Travel Safe Zones and these areas will be set up all along the interstate located from about 1 mile north of hwy Z in Pevely to Hwy 67 in Festus. Message boards throughout the targeted area will alert drivers when they are entering a zone. Inside these zones, fines will be doubled and warnings will not be given. The boards will also indicate the number of tickets issued within the zone.

The purpose of a Travel Safe Zone is to reduce accidents, especially in growing areas where traffic volume is increasing. Jefferson County officials have successfully tried this type of enforcement in the past because the particular stretch of highway they are targeting has had a higher number of accidents.
