ST. LOUIS MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
Saturday morning's driving rain put the annual Veiled Prophet (VP) Independence Day parade in real jeopardy. It had never been cancelled in 131 years, but Saturday downpours put that streak to the test. Even for an optimist, it didn't look good. Streets normally flooded with people were immersed in the more traditional sense. Only the bravest of the brave scampered through the rain drops to get an early spot.
Parade organizers were determined to not cancel the historic parade unless it was absolutely necessary.
"When we're looking at those forecasts what we're looking foremost at is the safety and security of everyone involved the parade whether they're on a float or watching. But we've never cancelled a parade in 131 years and we're anxious to get it off," says Bob Schenk with the VP Parde.
The scheduled start time for the parade was 10:00 am, but organizers decided to postpone the start to allow the heaviest rains to move out and parade goers to move in. Around 11:30, the parade began.
