STLMoms Parents As Teachers Tip - Getting Fit With Your Child
When you're caring for young children, finding time to get fit may seem like an impossible feat. But combining time with your child and your child's love of moving makes a manageable fitness routine for parents. The National Center for Parents as Teachers suggests some ways for you to get started on the fitness track, no matter what your child's age:

With your infant:

* Dance to music while securely holding your baby.

* For a little weight training, carry your baby around on errands instead of putting her in a stroller.

* Put your baby in the stroller and take a brisk walk.

* Look for exercise classes specially designed for you and your baby.

With your toddler:

* Encourage your child to imitate your stretching moves, such as touching toes, head circles and side reaches. These will improve his balance while you're improving your flexibility.

* Enjoy the playground with your child by showing him how to climb the ladder. Or jog in place while you push your child on the swing.

* Run when your child runs. Toddlers love a good game of chase. Roll a ball for your child to chase with you right behind him.

With your preschooler:

* Do leg squats or lunges. From a squatting position, jump up in the air. Ask your child to imitate you.

* While doing abdominal crunches, ask your child to play Pat-a-Cake on your stomach to help you engage all your stomach muscles.

* Go swimming together. Both of you can hold on to the side of the pool and kick. Put your child in a safe flotation device and tread water beside her to build strength and endurance.
