LAMBERT AIRPORT (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
Four young men eager to change the world through a documentary are back home with a story they didn't expect to tell. What began as a plan to show others what real poverty means also became a life and death story. In early August, a small plane crashed in Nairobi, Kenya with two Americans on board who had been video taping one of the world's largest slums. The young men from St. Louis County survived. Their pilot and a mechanic died.
The two colleagues of the crash survivors arrived home Saturday night. Brothers David and Tim Peterka of not-for-profit "Speak Up Productions" returned from five months of living and recording what it means to survive on a dollar and twenty five cents a day.
David says, "The biggest things that blew me away were running into people living in extreme poverty taking care of other people living in extreme poverty. Sacrificing what they had people not even barely able to take care of their own kids that have five orphan kids living in their home also."
Tim adds, "The key is empowering people. You have to empower people you can't just give them a handout because that will be spent and then they are back in the same situation. So I think probably micro finance, micro credit loans are the best answer."
