ALTON, IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
October rains paired with this week's return to wet weather sent a mudslide down the bluff at Alton's Piasa Park. The mud has slid into the side of the building that houses the park restrooms. Mud splattered the structure and damaged a retaining wall. No one was hurt and the famous Piasa artwork was not marred. Nearby Summit Street is closed after water created two big holes in the street. Officials don't want the street to collapse and a car to roll down the hill.
Summit is believed to be one of the oldest streets in town. Once the weather clears crews plan to make needed repairs but until then both park and street officials say the section of park and the street will remain closed until they can be made safe.
Parks Director Brad Cunnigham says, "Our main concern is that we protect the general public. Close this station down until the weather improves and we can have a chance to inspect what we have and make sure we don't have something going on there. Cause once this starts were afraid this might continue and could get a little worse."
Neighbor Lisa Ruelas says, "It's crazy, it really is. I don't want to drive down the street that's for sure. I'll drive up the street and go around it
