Who would object to free trash pick-up? Apparently a number of people in Arnold. The city is talking about restoring free trash service, but some residents say Arnold just can't afford it. Local governments all over are short of cash. When the crunch hit in Arnold late last year, free trash pick-up was eliminated. Residents now pay seven dollars a month. The mayor and some city council members say they have enough money squirrled away to now restore free trash service.But some residents and lawmakers say, "no way."
The city proposes using money from a $5 million reserve fund to pick up the tab for trash service. But critics of free trash pick-up, and surprisingly, there are plenty, say a city facing a $1.8 million budget shortfall this year is reason not to dip into those reserves.
