Officials in East St. Louis held a joint news conference with the East St. Louis superintendent of school Friday to announce and anti-violence initiative.
The initiative comes after three women were killed and another accidently shot herself. Jamaica McDaniel and her two friends, Tenikia Harvey and Raykel Gathing were shot to death inside a car Saturday night. Milton Latimore, 21, is charged with murder.
Police say he admitted killing the women out of jealousy. Latimore is the father of McDaniel's two sons.
Visitation for Jamaica McDaniel is Friday at Officer Funeral Home in East St. Louis from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral is set for noon Saturday at Visspie Baptist Church in East St. Louis.
East St. Louis has had 27 homicides this year. Police say they will beef up gang suppression efforts and target high-crime neighborhoods. The schools are also hoping to get a better handle on the violence so that children are not at risk.
There are also plans to conduct a public forum and start purple ribbon campaign to help prevent violence.
