(KTVI - FOX2Now.com) - Trying to defy old age is an age old desire. But what if you could live a long healthy life with a lot less effort? Researchers at Washington University think that potential might be in a naturally occurring enzyme called Resveratrol, a powerful anti-oxidant. It can be found in some nuts, grapes, and red wine.

Now researchers at Washington University are looking at whether large amounts of Resveratrol will make human cells live longer, because the longer they do, the longer we will.

While other studies of Resveratrol are finding encouraging results, some doctors think they have already found a way to slow the aging process, no drugs required. It's called calorie restriction, an extreme diet of about 1200 to 1500 calories a day also thought to slow the aging process.

So now, Washington University is using volunteers to test whether the ease of taking Resveratrol could have the same benefit as the more difficult regimen of eating smaller meals. So far, testing in lab animals has shown improved insulin sensitivity, and no evidence of the DNA damage that happens to cells as they get older.

And while doctors do not promise Resveratrol will replace the need for sensible eating and exercise, it may give us all a lot longer to do both.

Washington University is still looking for study volunteers, who will be paid for their time. To keep the results simple, they are looking only for post-menopausal Caucasian women between 40 and 70 years old in relatively good health.
