The first driver has taken a trip down the new Interstate 64/Highway 40. The interstate 64/Highway 40 lanes are now open, at least eastbound lanes. Lex Jones was the first driver to drive the new highway. Crews removed the first set of barricades at Kingshighway around 6:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. They opened up another stretch at each stop on the highway. The entire highway is expected to be opened by midnight Sunday.
Earlier Sunday, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on the new I-64 Sunday morning in the westbound lanes between Hampton and the Tamm Avenue overpass. Numerous dignitaries were on hand from Governor Nixon to the head of MoDOT Pete Rahn. Part of the highway that runs through St. Louis city was named the Jack Buck Memorial Highway after the famed St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster. One of the signs was unveiled at the ceremony.
