Major League Baseball hits a home run for the kids at Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club. Volunteers build a field of dreams during All Star Week. The club sits on the site of the old Sportsman's Park, home to the St. Louis Browns. The Cardinals played there too. Bill DeWitt Jr. of the St. Louis Cardinals sees the past building the future "The ball park has been gone but the sprit is alive at this historic site."
Flint Fowler is the club's Executive Director. He says the site where the new field sits was a dumping ground for trash, old furniture, appliances, and tires. "We've been dreaming about the day when we could convert some of these vacant lots to usable space for our kids, something that would bring a sense of hope to the community."
The Major League Baseball All Star Game is a fan favorite. This week MLB picked up some new fans. The league along with the St. Louis Cardinals, Anheuser-Busch and Rawlings write a new page in sports history with the dedication of this new field. Caleb Bell is the Team Capt. for the Herbert Hoover Spartans. "I think its really going to improve our skills and all the excitement these people gave us its going to make us real good and make us get really energized for it. "
Former Cardinal Lou Brock says that's exactly what needs to happen."I think the dream never dies, and I think that's what this represents."
The street was even renamed Sportsman's Park Way. Magical Builders helped direct volunteers and contractors. Jon Frank says the group does a major project every year in the city hosting the All Star Game. "By strengthening our communities you can greatly improve the lives of children, and they feel proud of the place they go every day."
The new All Star Field offers hope and opportunity for young athletes as well as the entire community.
