Kirkwood Soccer Players Raise Cancer Awareness
KIRKWOOD, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - A cancer fundraiser Friday night at a Kirkwood High School soccer game had special meaning for two of the Kirkwood players and the entire team. It was more than fundraising motivating the players Friday night. When you're young, no one's supposed to die. But in the last year and a half, cancer claimed the mothers of two of the Kirkwood players. That gave special meaning to Friday night's fundraiser called Kick For Cancer.

Kirkwood player Jordan Frick's mother died of cancer at just about the same time goalie Caroline Fletcher's mom also died of cancer.

The team dressed in pink Friday night for breast cancer awareness in their loss to Lafayette. They raised money for the group Friends Of Kids With Cancer. They also reflected on how the cancer deaths affected them.

Caroline Fletcher says, "My friends and family are always there for me. That's who I went to every day. I know that they're always going to be there for me, know that they're always going to be there to have my back so that's basically who I went to all the time."

Jennifer Hippisley, also on the Kirkwood High soccer team, adds, "A lot of people think, you know, it's never going to happen to me and so it's really surprising and upsetting. So it really makes you realize that a death can happen to anybody. Something tragic can happen. We all need to be there to support each other."

Phil Cotta, Kirkwood Girl's Soccer Coach, explains, "Any time you know you lose a loved one like that, it's always going to be a tough time and we just wanted to kind of come together as a team for them and their families."

This is Kirkwood high's second annual Kick For Cancer benefit. Both Jordan and Caroline are seniors. Jordan's off to Purdue University, and Caroline's heading to McKendree College where both will play soccer.
