ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com)—
The Lindbergh High School band is getting ready for a trip to the Rose Parade in California. 200 Lindbergh High School students are willing to practice in the hot weather, and they will be out there when it's also ice cold in December."I think it pretty much prepares us for anything," said Tyler Esselman, a senior at the school.
Sure, they take breaks and drink plenty of water, but they want to build up their endurance to be prepared to march five and half miles in the tournament of roses parade in California on January 1st.
"It's something I think all bands look at as the Superbowl, the World Series for marching bands," said band director Bob Spiegelman.
Lindbergh is only one of 15 high schools outside of California to be selected to take part in the rose parade. It's a competitive and intense application process.
"Video, audio, resumes, letters of recommendation, history of the band, prestigious performances from the past," said Spiegelman, noting that medical school sometimes looks easier.
The band had to hold fundraisers to earn enough money for the trip. So far they have $100,000, on their way to a $400,000 goal.
Students are confident they'll raise another 300 grand to take a trip of a lifetime.
"Just really cool feels phenomenal to know we're going to be the ones doing it," said Jessica Frederick, a senior in the band.
"This will definitely be something I will tell me kids and grandkids about," added Tyler Esselman.
It's the second time in the school's history that the band will march in the rose parade.
