EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
Some 24 hours after a Granite City area man was murdered in his car near Pontoon Beach, Major Case Squad detectives tell us they are making progress in the case.
Friday afternoon into Friday evening they were questioning a person of interest. The victim, 19 year old Stephen Nemsky, graduated from Granite City High School just last year.
His family tells us he was supposed to meet up with his girlfriend and other friends after attending some classes Thursday night, but he never made it. Investigators say Nemsky was shot in the neck and died at the scene on the 4100 block of Division near Pontoon Beach.
The murder is especially upsetting for Dorothy Burgess who lives just feet from where the shooting happened. She says she knew Stephen when he was younger. "I think it's just really sad because the boy was about my son's age. They were in the cub scouts together, they played soccer together, they went to school together," said Dorothy.
Investigators say the murder happened about 10:30 Thursday night. They tell us Nemsky was involved in an altercation with someone just before the shooting and he was shot in his car. Police believe Nemsky's foot hit the gas after he was shot and his car in reverse crashed into a fence.
A young girl who we are not identifying came out of her home after hearing commotion. She saw Nemsky moments after he was shot. "When we came out here there was some dude like walking by the trash can. And then like all of a sudden he just like fell. And then my sister yelled are you ok? And he didn't reply back or anything so that's when she called the cops," explained the girl.
Investigators say they have been working active leads. They're hoping for a break quickly. "It's always promising whenever you have the victim identified reasonably early and then you can also identify what the victim was doing in the past six to eight hours prior to the event," said Brad Wells, the Deputy Commander of the Major Case Squad.
Investigators won't detail anything about Nemsky's activities leading up to the shooting. Nemsky's family says they don't know of anyone who would want to hurt him. They tell me he played basketball and soccer in high school and enjoyed fishing. If you have any information on the case, call the Madison County Sheriff's Department.
