St. Louis, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com)—
With a down economy and dropping state revenues, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon spoke Wednesday to an audience of St. Louis business leaders and college business student at Washington University about the states dire finances.Facing a $500 billion dollar budget shortfall this year, the governor has been working the state legislature to make cuts to state programs and services, while trying to plug the budget deficit. Nixon feels he's gotten good cooperation from both republican and democrats in the budget process. But he warns that with trying to fund education and public safety, tough choices have to be made. Programs that aren't delivering for the taxpayers will have to go.
Missouri lawmakers a have less than a month to balance the state budget, but the governor feels confident that a bi-partisan bill will be passed by both houses.
