An O'Fallon, Missouri, couple finds themselves in a life or death struggle. The husband is now credited with saving the life of a woman found unconscious in a burning home. Jason Orf saved the woman. "I didn't know if there was gas or tanks inside that garage. I didn't know if it was going to explode or what was going to happen." Disregarding his own safety, Jason Orf, 25, kicked his way through the front door and into the home on North Main Street.

Jessica Orf was a little worried when her husband kicked the door in.

Jason had no idea at that point if the house was occupied. The fire was raging outside as Jessica watched helplessly, "The fire was definitely taking off. It was coming out of the garage door and everything like that. So, I mean, it would've been engulfing the home soon."

Her husband was inside for what seemed like forever, "At first, it didn't phase me but then, about five minutes later I called him on his cell phone, trying to get him out."

Jason went from room to room through the darkness and the smoke. Suddenly, he found a woman – Nancy Kinder – laying in her bed half asleep and confused, "I kind've pulled her off the bed because she kept laying there."

He managed to get her outside where firefighters battled the spreading blaze.

Scott Avery with the O'Fallon Fire Department explained, "The young man who helped the lady out of the house, he's the real story here. He's the one who went above and beyond."

Efforts to reach the woman were unsuccessful, but Jason said she did thank him, "She was very grateful and she was very nice."

The woman lived alone in the rented property.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire broke out around 1:30am Thursday. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and kept the fire from spreading from the garage to most of the home. However, many items kept inside the garage were charred or burned.

No one was injured. It happened in the 1100 block of North Main.
