CLAYTON, MO (KTVI - FOX2now.com)—
Heartland Bank employees collecting money for the Old News Boys charity in Clayton were forced to stop their work by police there early this morning. The workers were told they were violating a city ordinance that bans soliciting on the streets.Bank Vice President Lisa Frederick says cops went so far as to threaten them with arrest if they didn't stop collecting for the charity.
"We've been on this corner for 2 years and so to get this news this morning was extremely disappointed and saddens us, she says."
The group had collected about $100 before police stepped in. The bank's CEO wrote a check for $700 more. That's the amount they thought they would raise today.
No one from Clayton police was available for comment.
