ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2Now.com) - Hair salons and pet groomers across the St. Louis area are joining efforts to clean-up the huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. They are saving cut hair from people and pets and sending it to the Gulf.

An organization called Matter of Trust is behind it all. Organizers say the hair can be used in mats and booms to soak up the oil. They say one pound of hair can soak up a quart of oil in a minute.

Salon St. Louis on South Grand has already collected 30 trash bags full of hair. Yuppy Puppy Pet Spa in OFallon, Missouri just started collecting cut animal hair a few days ago.

Matter of Trust has been swamped by offers of help. The organization is asking salons and groomers to register with the Matter of Trust web site before anyone sends any hair anywhere. Matter of Trust says there are 2,600 oil spills around the country each year. Once a salon or groomer registers the organization will notify them by e-mail where the hair should be shipped.
