A 13 year old Francis Howell Middle School student collapsed in P.E. class Thursday afternoon. Austin Redd stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating. Students had just spent a few minutes running in the gym to warm up and for a game of soccer. The P.E. teacher called the school nurse for help. Another educator brought a medical device which can shock a persons heart and get it started again.

A sheriffs deputy who is the schools resource officer also helped along with the other people. By the time paramedics showed up Austin Redd was breathing again and conscious. He was taken to St. Louis Childrens Hospital. School officials say hes expected to survive. Teacher say as far as they know the youngster had no pre-existing medical conditions. It was a real team life saving effort in the Francis Howell School District.
