ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
President Obama heads to a Republican stronghold in Missouri Wednesday to deliver another rallying call for his health care reform package before Congress. He will speak in St. Charles City at St. Charles High School in the late afternoon to an invited audience of 500 to 600. Sixty of those will be students hand picked from the school district's two high schools.
The school district learned Friday it was the likely spot for the president's speech. He is coming to town to help U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill raise campaign funds Wednesday night at an event at the Renaissance Hotel.
This is the first time a president has spoken at the high school. "Everybody is so excited," said Supt. Randal Charles Tuesday as staff members and White House advance staff scurried to complete preparations in an auxiliary gymnasium. Roads surrounding the school at Kingshighway and Waverly will be closed to traffic beginning at noon Wednesday. The school day ends Wednesday at 11:30 am.
"Its a once in a lifetime thing. You don't get a lot of opportunities like this," said senior Andrew Montasser who will be one of the students in the audience. He said teachers have been talking about the visit, but not much about the president's topic: health care reform.
Superintendent Charles said he did not know how many teachers were talking about the president's visit in class. But he agreed, "It is obviously a teachable moment for kids not only about this particular issue but just the political process in general."
Republicans will hold a health care conference at 10 am Wednesday at the St. Charles Convention Center with a video appearances by Congressman Todd Akin and other leaders.
