ST. LOUIS (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
St. Louis Community College will shut down daycare centers on two campuses offered to its students. The budgetary move is drawing fire from young parents attending classes there. Many attended a Thursday night meeting to argue against the move, but their words fell on deaf ears as trustees voted to close daycare on the Meramec and Forest Park campuses next July.
Two child care centers on St. Louis Community College campuses will close come July of next year. Thursday night, the board of trustees for the Community College voted four to two to close the child care centers on the Meramec and Forest Park campuses. College officials say they need to cut one million dollars from their budget for next year to balance it.
Closing the two centers will save $529,000. A college spokesperson says only about 200 students of the 28,000 in the system use the centers and the cost to keep them open is simply too much for the amount of students using the services.
The decision has left students who use the centers outraged. Some tell us without the centers, they will have to stop their education because finding other child care will be too expensive and too inconvenient. The centers only cost $4 an hour for the students to use.
The child care center on the Florissant Valley campus will not close because it is a teaching facility.
