ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) -
The wet weather throughout Christmas Eve day and night made for some slick roads and treacherous driving conditions. There were numerous crashes that have left some hurt and one man dead.
One of the most serious crashes happened on I-70 in North City. Investigators say there were several crashes about 8:30 Thursday morning on I-70 at Adelaide. All of the injuries from the initial wrecks were minor.
But the story then took a tragic turn. Police say 54 year old Reginald Lee got out of his car to go check on people who were involved in another one of the crashes.
Investigators tell us as Lee was walking back to his car in the grass on the side of the freeway, a pick up truck heading east on 70 lost control, spun out and hit Lee killing him.
Earlier in the overnight hours, there were several other crashes. One on 70 at the OFallon Park exit involving two cars and two big rigs shut down 70 East for about 30 minutes.
In Kirkwood, crews had to cut the driver out of a car after it flipped over. And in South City at I-44 and Hampton, a car went airborne after coming off the freeway--- hitting another car.
We're told nobody was killed in those crashes.
Drivers told us the roads were slick and hazardous throughout Christmas Eve day and night.
"You can't really see anything. The roads are really slippery and there's people following you too close all the time. You kind of got to watch yourself," said Maryland Heights resident James Crocker.
Olivette Police Sergeant David Wolf added about Christmas Eve night, "Its dark outside, there could be potholes. There could be slippery spots on the road that people just arent as aware as when its light outside. So when its dark like this, when its raining, people really need to slow down and just take it easy."
In that deadly I-70 crash, police say the 40 year old driver of the truck that hit and killed Lee did stop.
Were told the driver is cooperating in the investigation.
As of Thursday night, police told us no charges had been filed and nobody was in custody.
