MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KTVI - FOX2now.com) - History vs. Safety. It's a debate between MoDOT and local historians protesting the scheduled demolition of an historic bridge in Route 66 State Park, built on the old Times Beach site. The bridge was built in 1931 and it closed in October. MoDOT wants to tear down the bridge saying their inspectors determined the bridge has deteriorated to the point where it is no longer safe for the traveling public. Joe Sonderman, local historian and Route 66 expert is outraged over MoDOT's plans. He offered advice for MoDOT instead of tearing down the bridge.
