CARTHAGE, Mo. (AP) — A science teacher at Carthage High School says he warned state and county officials five years ago about high levels of E. Coli in Jasper County waters, but no one seemed to care.
Wayne Christian says his team of students found high levels of the bacteria while doing stream sampling. He says his results were ignored by state and county officials.
Christian's group asked the Jasper County Commission to post warning signs at swimming sites with high bacteria, but no signs were ever posted.
Steve McKarus, with the Jasper County Health Department, says posting of waterways is under discussion. But he says there is concern about the cost and the ability to keep up with changing water conditions.
Elevated E. Coli results in the state's waterways have been the focus of controversy after state officials withheld information from the public about over the Memorial Day weekend.
