Washington University-St. Louis does not offer athletic scholarships but they still can draw some of the most talented on top of smartest athletes in the country. Both their men's and women's basketball teams had a chance to claim Division III national championships Saturday.

Washington University's men's team is again Division champion. Tyler Nading had 20 points and eight rebounds yesterday as Wash U. won its second consecutive NCAA Division III men's national championship, beating Richard Stockton 61-52.

Sean Wallis added 16 points and 10 assists for the Bears (29-2), who needed 27 years to get coach Mark Edwards his first national title and only one year to get him another one.

Santini Lancioni scored 19 points to lead Richard Stockton (30-3), which had its 18-game winning streak snapped.

The winning didn't pass to the women's team unfortunately. Kristen Shielee scored a game-high 17 points to lead George Fox past Washington, Mo., 60-53 and its first NCAA Division III championship on Saturday.

Elise Kuenzi added 14 points and Sage Indendi 13 for George Fox (32-0) the sixth unbeaten Division III national champion ever and the first from the Pacific coast. The Bruins, from Portland, Ore., hadn't advanced past the Sweet 16 before this season.

Zoe Unruh and Janice Evans each scored a team-high 11 points for Washington (26-5). The Bears, from St. Louis, were denied their fifth national title in school history and their first since an unprecedented four-year reign in Division III ended in 2001.

The title game was played before a crowd of 1,830 at DeVos Fieldhouse at Hope College.
